Με αρχικά μέλη τους Syd Barrett, Nick Mason, Roger Waters και Richard Wright και ηγέτη τον Syd Barrett μπήκαν δυναμικά στην στη δισκογραφία με δύο δίσκους ψυχεδελικής rock το 1967 και 1968. Ο ασταθής χαρακτήρας, λόγω υπερβολικής χρήσης ουσιών, του Syd Barrett, οδήγησαν τους υπόλοιπους να τον αντικαταστήσουν με τον κιθαρίστα David Gilmour ο οποίος συμμετείχε στο δεύτερο κατά σειρά δίσκο τους με τίτλο "A Saucerful of Secrets" που κυκλοφόρησε το 1968.
Με αυτή τη σύνθεση που διατηρήθηκε μέχρι το 1985 οι Pink Floyd γνώρισαν τεράστια επιτυχία κυκλοφορώντας μερικά από τα πιο σηματικά άλμπουμ στην ιστορία της Rock μουσικής, όπως τα: The Dark Side of the Moon )1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977), The Wall (1979).
Το 1985 ο Roger Waters αποχωρεί και βρίσκεται σε δικαστική διαμάχη με τους υπόλοιπους για την χρήση του ονόματος του συγκροτήματος, διαμάχη που έληξε με συμβιβασμότων αντιμαχομενων πλευρών.
Το 1994 κυκλοφορεί το τελευταίο άλμπουμ με τίτλο "The Division Bell" και 20 χρόνια μετά το "The Endless River" που περιλαμβάνει κυρίς ηχογραφήσεις του Richard Wright από το 1993.
