Βέβαια η τεράστια καριέρα της Holiday είχε ξεκινήσει 20 χρόνια νωρίτερα με εκατοντάδες τραγούδια που κυκλοφόρησαν σε δισκάκια 78 στροφών, όλο αυτό το χρονικό διάστημα. Η αρχή έγινε το 1933 όταν η Billie Holiday κυκλοφορεί το τραγούδι "Riffin' the Scotch" με τον Benny Goodman και την ορχήστρα του. Το τραγούδι πούλησε 5000 αντίτυπα και έγινε μεγάλη επιτυχία.
Από το 1952 έως το 1957 κυκλοφορεί τους δίσκους της με την ετικέτα της Clef Records, που αποτέλεσε την πρώτη αποτύπωση, στον κόσμο των δισκογραφικών εταιρειών, της Verve Records, με την καθοδήγηση του σπαυδαίου παραγωγού Norman Granz, ενώ το 1958 μεταπηδά στην Columbia όπου κυκλοφορεί το τελευταίο, εν ζωή, άλμπουμ της και το 1959 από την MGM το μεταθανάτιο και τελευταίο studio album της καριέρας της.
