Μετά την διάλυση των Beatles, ο McCartney κυκλοφορεί το εξαιρετικό πρώτο σόλο άλμπουμ του, με τίτλο το όνομά του, το 1970 και αμέσως μετά με τη σύμπραξη της της γυναίκας του Linda, το άλμπουμ Ram (1971)
To 1971 ο Paul και η Linda McCartney με την προσθήκη των Denny Laine (κιθάρα) και Denny Seiwell (ντραμς) δημιουργούν τους Wings, ένα από τα πιο αξιόλογα συγκροτήματα της δεκαετίας του '70 με πολύ καλές δισκογραφικές στιγμές και αποκορύφωμα το πολύ σπουδαίο άλμπουμ με τίτλο Band on the Run που κυκλοφόρησε το 1973.
