Τον Ιούλιο του 1965 στη παραλία Venice Beach του Los Angeles ο Jim Morrison και ο Ray Manzarek ιδρύουν τους Doors, το συγκρότημα που κυριάρχησε στη rock μουσική σκηνή, στο τέλος της δεκαετίας του 60 στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες, αλλά και στον υπόλοιπο κόσμο.
Ο Morrison εμπνεύστηκε το όνομα του συγκροτήματος από το μυθιστόρημα του Aldous Huxley, The Doors of Perception (Οι Πύλες της Ενόρασης). Ο Manzarek συμπληρώνει το συγκρότημα με δύο ακόμα μουσικούς , το κιθαρίστα Robby Krieger και τον ντράμερ John Densmore.Την επόμενη χρονιά (1967) υπογράφουν συμβόλαιο με την δισκογραφική Elektra records, κερδίζοντας παγκόσμια αναγνώριση.
Το single "Light my fire" έφτασε στο νούμερο ένα των charts και οι Doors έγιναν γνωστοί σε όλη την χώρα. Πολύ σύντομα γνωρίζουν τεράστια επιτυχία, όχι μόνο για τα εξαιρετικά τους τραγούδια, αλλά και για τον πολυτάλαντο, εκρηκτικό και συχνά προκλητικό πάνω στη σκηνή Jim Morrison, που πολύ γρήγορα γίνεται παγκόσμιο είδωλο. Το 1971(3 Ιουλίου) ο Morrison, βρίσκεται νεκρός στο διαμέρισμά του, μάλλον από υπερβολική χρήση ναρκωτικών και τα υπόλοιπα μέλη συνεχίζουν ως τρίο μέχρι το 1973 που οριστικά διαλύονται.
