Μια από τις σημαντικότερες τραγουδοποιούς της Αμερικάνικης αλλά και της παγκόσμιας μουσικής σκηνής η
Joan Chandos Baez γεννήθηκε στο Staten Island της Νέας Υόρκης το 1941. Το 1958 η οικογένειά της μετακομίζει στη Βοστώνη και εκεί η δεκαεπτάχρονη Joan αρχίζει να τραγουδάει σε καφέ της περιοχής Belmond.
Το 1959 ο εξαιρετικός μουσικός και τραγουδιστής της folk μουσικής
Bob Gibson, τον οποίο είχε γνωρίσει λίγους μήνες πριν , την προσκαλεί να τραγουδήσει μαζί του στο
Newport Folk Festival. Εκεί οι δύο τους τραγούδησαν σε ντουέτο το "Virgin Mary Had One Son" και το "We Are Crossing Jordan River".
Η εμφάνιση της στο Newport Folk Festival, αποτελεί την έναρξη της καλλιτεχνικής της πορείας. Την ίδια χρονιά υπογράφει συμβόλαιο με την Vanguard Records και την επόμενη το 1960 κυκλοφορεί ο πρώτος της προσωπικός δίσκος με τον τίτλο Joan Baez.
Πέρα από την τεράστια καλλιτεχνική της πορεία και τα τραγούδια της που είναι παγκόσμια γνωστά, η Joan Baez έγινε πολύ γνωστή για την αντιπολεμική και αντιρατσιστική δράση της και τις συμμετοχές της σε πορείες διαμαρτυρίας για το Βιετνάμ, κατά των φυλετικών διακρίσεων αλλά και υπέρ του κινήματος ελευθερίας του λόγου.
Επίσης σημαντική στιγμή στην καριέρα της υπήρξε η γνωριμία, αλλά και η πολύχρονη σχέση, με τον
Bob Dylan. Από το 1961 έως και τα μέσα της δεκαετίας του '60 Baez και Dylan, έκαναν πολλές κοινές μουσικές εμφανίσεις σαν ντουέτο, ενώ ένα μεγάλο μέρος των τραγουδιών της είναι του Bob Dylan.
